Idea for those Amazon gift cards

For all those Amazon gift cards, try Birth of Legends. A great tale, focusing on the of coming of age of six main characters, in a time of war mixed with political intrigue wrapped in a fantasy epic adventure with the genesis of steam power and technology, almost sums up my book. I'm sure you will not be disappointed.
Parental note: it is safe for young teenagers, violence is limited to Adam West Batman style, no foul language, and no adult situations.

Offical Announcment! Wizard World Comic Convention 2017

I'm heading to New Orleans next month! Come out and see me, get your signed copy of Birth of Legends or Murder in the Dust. Official dates, January 6-8th. It is a family friendly event and a great time to be had by all.

Christmas Gift Idea

Friends, as you plan your Christmas gift lest this year, take a moment to explore my books. Birth of Legends is an epic fantasy adventure in the style of Lord of the Rings and Wheel of Time. It has a wonderful twist of the addition of proto steampunk. (the beginning of steam technology integrated into the fantasy genre) The other is Murder in the Dust. It is a mystery set in the same world as BoL, yet has different characters and a different focus. I am a father of children so I write cleanly and shy not away from positive Christian spirituality. I also support strong male role models. Recommended age 12-65, accessible for the younger yet complex enough for the older.

Where do the Hexa-cattle, hexa-horses idea come from Shaun?

In my core, I am an observer. I like to sit back and see things that others miss. I guess, I was told, 'if you look at something, see something," too many times. Here is something I have seen.

When is the second book coming out?

"It's been a while, when is the second book coming out?"

I have heard this question thrice in the past few weeks. Although it brings joy to my heart, that readers want to know what happens next, I sit amiss of certain historical context. What are you talking about Shaun?

How long did we wait between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back? Three LONG years.

How long did we wait to see if the Doctor would survive his latest deadly peril? a WHOLE week.

When Tom Clancy wrote The Hunt for The Red October, he spent twenty years on it. (off and on) I think he was rushed for the second and his quality suffered.

I do not want to put out an inferior story. I know where the heroes and villains are going. I know how they get there. I want to make each word and scene the best I can, better than I have in the past and not as well as the future.

It is coming. I have a working title now, (no I will not share it here and now,) a full outline and many aspects I want to weave into the plot. The second book is on its way, but it may be a few months before you can get your copy. What would really help is that each one who has read and liked it, give me a review on Amazon or Good reads, and/or tell a friend. Thanks in advance.

Geekdcon 2016

Last week, I had an Internet snafu. So I did not get to announce my attendance at Geek'dcon like I needed to. Thanks for all that purchased a book this weekend. Here is the table.

Benchmark moment...

The other day, my boy Phillip came to me and showed me his interpretation of Mattatias. Here is what he handed me.

That's correct, I now have a Minifig version of Mattatias.

The Chronicler has much to say to people today.

“The people of Zerual are a trusting lot. They are fair and content to live their lives. These people make the best prey,” the Chronicler began. This night was rainy and dreary. The dampness seeped into the bones of the old and the very young. He used his environment to accentuate his words. The mood for a dreary story reached an apex. He thanked God for the slow-falling rain and for the large drops that made a lot of noise when they struck the tin roofs, the wooden slates, and the large puddles. He would have to talk louder than normal and he would lose his vocal range, but it would not outweigh his emotional impact.
He continued. “The best way to control people is to supply their needs so they can pursue higher endeavors. With a benefactor giving them food and clothing, they can focus on leisure and art. The local businessman will shift his focus from supplying staples of life to charming items. Craftsmen will shift from functional, practical goods and tools to frail works of art. Food providers will shift their output from healthy, hearty dining to frilly eye candy. Oh, the real menial jobs will remain, but they will be shifted to the least educated members of society.
“Once this has been established for a generation or two, the real control can slam down. Those used to this supply from their benefactors will demand it as a right. They deserve what they are given, no matter the personal cost. They even sacrifice the real wealth of the country to obtain it. ‘Those rich people are only that way from our labor.’ The sinister leader swoops onto the scene and feeds the rabble their marching orders. They gladly obey, for they will lose their needs if they are not given them. They have no self-sufficiency. They have no sense of true worth. They have shifted their focus from God blessing them to the other benefactor. They will do anything to keep what they need. This is the way Zerual fell.”

The rain pattered. No one spoke. The Chronicler took a deep breath. “Let me weave you a tale of ultimate deceit. The people of Zerual never knew they were slaves, even when they were killing one another.…”

Quotation from the Mighty Man Manual

Mattatias remembers this when he receives praise from Kalamar. (in chapter 12)

Quote from the Chronicler.

“Ropermai teems with interesting people and places. I have lost count of how many villages, towns, and cities I have visited. Vistas of natural beauty are everywhere. It would take me a very long time to recount all of the people I have met. From kings to wretches and everyone in between, I have talked to them, lived with them, and fought side by side with them. No matter their station in life, all of them live their lives hoping it will be better down the road. No matter from where they hail, they all are basically doing the same thing. Oh, they may be performing different tasks in different ways, but when you step back and look, they all want to make the world a better place. Your eyes reveal the scoffing in your heart. I can hear you say, ‘But we are better than those Zannians.’

The biggest lie common to all men is that they are superior to others. Ability and drive separate a common man from an extraordinary individual. Each man strives for his own power and glory, his children’s happiness and success, and the improvement of his fellow man. The striving remains the same. Results of this endeavor may vary, but my question for the night is, what does it take to make those giant steps in humanity? We struggle against the forces of mediocrity, boredom, futility, and frustration, and it seems impossible at times to make any headway. Are we to remain downtrodden serfs serving only one man? What is the quality in men or women who really make a difference in their community? How can those men look these problems in the face and not waver? I have narrowed it down to one thing: determination.

Philosophy in writing

I often put my personal philosophy in the words I write. Here is how I open the first chapter of Birth of Legends. Do you agree with this?

Chapter One
Awakenings

“Friendship can change the world.” The Chronicler addressed the congregants and distinguished visitors to the Zion Traveler Church of Greater Onger. He so enjoyed constructing a familial feeling in order to redirect it in order to prove a greater point.
“Look around at your friends here. Try to envision your life without their influence.” He allowed a hush to fall. He continued, dropping his volume. “Now think of it after your lifelong friend is gone.” He had perfected quiet projection; everyone in the vast auditorium heard his request. “I can see those with deep friendships not really wanting to think about such, but settle your mind on what it took of yourself for you to be that friend. You had to give first. You had to give often. You had to compromise first. Wealth, power, even land cannot be taken with you. What can you take? Memories,” the Chronicler said.
All the members of the Zion Traveler Church of Greater Onger took the same week off of work every summer to hold special meetings and services. The Chronicler would attend every year he could. During the day, the church parishioners would scatter across the city in small groups, fixing and cleaning homes of the elderly. They gave food to the needy, they visited to the lonely, they ministered to those in jail, and they tended the sick. During the evening, they invited everyone to a time of singing and teaching. This night, the Chronicler had the privilege of being the keynote speaker. He spoke on what he knew best, true friendship.
“No one enough emotional reservoir to be a true friend to each person you meet. You can be friendly. However, you must choose which relationship you are going to pour your heart and soul into.” He stopped, tears welling up in his eyes.

He gained his composure and continued. “This comes at a devastating price. The loss of a true friend will leave a hole in your soul that will not be filled. The rest of your life will have moments consumed with what you could have done or said. Other times, you will want to share the big events and accomplishments, yet those ears and hearts will not be there to rejoice with you. Sometimes, in the quite calm of solitude, you will hear their laughter. Your heart will break.” He swallowed the huge lump in his throat. His voice uncharacteristically broke. “But this should never keep you from extending your love, respect, and inner self with your true friends. It only makes the relationship stronger. It makes you stronger. It makes you whole. The only thing that will never pass away into dust is the relationship of a true friend. Thus your world will be changed.” The Chronicler sat down on the podium, tears streaming, to the quiet of people reaching out to one another. He missed his friends.

10 Things I learned at Space City

Over my history of standing in front of people and teaching, I made it a point to share my personal reflections as I traveled through life and the places I go. I hope and pray that some or all of these are inspirational to you and may bring a smile to you.

Here they are, the 10 Things I Learned at Space City Comicon.

1. Whatever your plans, you can never rely on the weather.  I take for granted the pleasant weather. Checking weather is so far down the list of what I do every day. It's not that I am aloof, I just am prepared for whatever. I am not afraid of getting wet. 'A brave man, enjoys the feel of nature on his face, but a wise man knows when to get out of the rain.' When I left for Houston, it was shiny sun everywhere. Buck helped wrap the chair because there was a 60% chance of rain in that Texas town. By 6 p.m. when we arrived, the chance was 100%.

2. Smiles and pleasant small talk ease official micro-meetings. Convention officials have a difficult job. They have to make sure all the vendors are happy as well as the fans, and they are under a time crunch. Be nice to them.

3. Everyone is important. I make it a point to stop and talk to the security people and the sanitation workers. I chat with the ladies at the food cash registers. Take a few moments to bring a smile.

4. Boldness favors the ready. The torrential rains kept most people away Friday night. This allowed some of the 'Stars' to walk around in relative privacy to see the convention. As "Data" walked by I called out 'Brent!' He stopped and came over to chat. By the way, he doesn't like to shake hands.

5. Just the presence of a friend makes a huge difference. With Buck sitting quietly behind me, helped me so much that weekend. Even for me, I cannot quantify or put into words the feelings having my friend there with me. So, make it a point this week to go do something with a friend.

6. Be Bold and Say important words. As we left Saturday evening, Colin Baker was shuttled to the back door. I made it a point to thank him for coming and express my fanhood. He told me that I was very kind. He was not having a good day. Texas heat does that to the British. He had no problem shaking my hand.

7. Prepunctual helps you get great parking spots. Being prepunctual, (my new word) is the act of getting to any event early, really early. Each day, we have great parking spots close to the rear entrance.

8. Where did vendors learn to ignore potential customers? As I stretched my legs from time to time, I walked the floor to meet the other authors, and see what was on display. Most of those on the other side of the table, just ignored me as I passed. I do not understand that marketing tactic. I spoke to everyone who passed whether they acknowledged me or not. My voice gave out, but I still made the effort. Sometimes it paid off with a book sale, sometimes it just generated interest.

9. Some of the best places to eat are unremarkable on the outside. By far the best experience for Buck and me was place close to home, The Catahoula's Cafe in Jonesville. It is part of a gas station at the traffic light. I had passed by so many times, but Buck and I were hungry. We tried it. What a wonderful experience! It was a great way to begin our experience.

10. I am so humbled by the effort of my family and friends. My son-in-law, Hudson Smith stood all day statuing to generate interest in my booth. He had many photo's taken of him holding my huge sign made by Becky and Andy Tripp. My s-daughter, Leah Smith, made wonderful food for us and helped sell at the booth. Becky's sister, Amy also gave her time to help sell. Becky and Andy met friends who actually showed up in costume and helped generate traffic. And of course, I cannot express what a difference Buck made on the trip. Thank you all.

Big Announcement Coming Soon!

I've been armpit deep in projects around the house for the past few weeks. Designing and redesigning to make sure everything is perfect BEFORE expensive wood is miscut, takes more time than I expect. Luckily, I have found a kindred spirit who has a superb wood workshop with material supply and industrial power tools! Just on the horizon, news is heading our way!

What's happening at Thornhill Creative

Birth of Legends sets the stage for the next two books in that Epic Adventure series. Murder in the Dust catches the Arcane Investigators in the beginning of their career. I plan to write on the Arcane Investigators as long as I have interesting and exciting stories. The Nathmaria Chronicles will be a stand alone trilogy... (I like the contradictory nature of those words)

To keep with the plan, I have just finished the first draft of the sequel to Murder in the Dust. After a short respite while I get a few home improvements completed, I will take up the pen again.... figuratively. Meanwhile, grab your copy of Murder in the Dust and tell me what you think.

Shaun, please explain your idea of Western themes.

What is a western theme?
Some confusion arose at the New Orleans Wizcon, about what I mean concerning 'Western Themes." Birth of Legends is not the Wild West, with cowboys vs indians. The Western theme I promote is the hero exploring an unknown land, surviving on his/her wits, skills, and resources. Think more frontier than Tombstone, this is my western theme. I think this fits well to the Proto-Steampunk technology. A frontier expansion and exploration allows the characters to discover the world as the reader.

I discovered a new curse to the writer.

I have a hyperactive imagination. In order to tame this beast, I write down the ideas and thoughts that are interesting and pertinent to me. Couple this with the laissez faire sorting and filing system and now I can't find what I wrote specifically so I will not forget.

The quote has often been attributed to Einstein, but I'm not sure. I have never verified it. However, it goes something like this; (with my own spin at the end.)

"Why remember what you can look up?... now if I can only remember where to look it up."

Whoever uttered these words did not have the vast amount of information at one's fingertips today. Trying to look up an obscure description in a scanned book from Google, is a nightmare of soul sucking time consumption. I want to add some historical realism to aid the plausibility of my stories. Some things I cannot make up and have that historical gravitas. Crap, I'm stuck. What a curse of a poor memory!

So, this year, I am taking the time to organize better, electronically as well as on biodegradable cellulose. Any suggestions?

As Promised, 10 things I learned at Wizcon...

Ten Things I Learned at
New Orleans Wizard World Comic Convention.

1.      If you are going with a group of people who will help you, keep them informed with all the emails you receive. It is so basic and elementary that it is easy to overlook.

2.       I should have remembered that when I’m in a city, I should be ready to walk a long way. Whether from the hotel to dinner or from the truck to my booth, both are further than expected.

3.       Guaranteed book sales are the ones with people leaving the table with a book in hand. Make that sale. If what you say is not closing the deal, then do not be afraid to change up and try different things.

4.       Saying hello, shocks most people. Greeting people happily will draw people to you. Be ready to enthusiastically tell people about your book.

5.       Make sure you keep your receipts. With a quick search of email, I showed the fact that I had four badges for my table, not two.

6.       Make friends with those who look least like your friends back home. From Phillip and Eddie, the parking lot attendants, to Mark, Dwayne, and Ben, at the tables next to me, each are important and made the whole experience much smoother.

7.       It is fun to dress up like a movie or a comic character, but it is more for someone to recognize you without prompting. Also, being able to recognize obscure characters give you Con Cred.

8.       However, if you make your costume so obscure, don’t expect anyone to recognize you.

9.       Take the time to walk around and see the people there. The celebrities and the common people both have interesting visual stories to tell.

10.  Laughter and enjoying the convention music track will greatly add to your convention experience. Smile and have a good time, people will react to that much better than the opposite.

Friday, ready for the crowd.

I forgot my tablecloth...

I was covered with sweat at this time. Excitement and nervousness fueled with the long walk bathed my back with a glistening sheen, if I could see it.

Wizard World Comic Convention 2016

What a fantastic time at Wizcon 2016! Thank you Becky Tripp, Andy Tripp, and Jonathan Stephens for helping me this weekend. Enough people took a chance on a local, first time author for me to pay for the table, the occupational license, food and fuel. Thank you everyone.

The Challenge still stands. When you finish the book, if you like it, please give me a review on Goodreads.com or the sale page on Amazon.com. If you do not like it, email me through the website, Nathmariachronicles.com and tell me your opinion.

As I compile it, I'll bring the 10 things I learned from WizCon 2016, for your reading enjoyment.
